Rural Migrant Health Overview

In this blog post, I will be reviewing the book written by cultural and medical anthropologist Seth Holme called Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies. The book is mainly about how the migrant farmworkers' experience and hardships, "Early in my fieldwork, I began to notice the segregation of workers in U.S. agriculture into a hierarchy of perceived ethnicity and citizenship."(Holmes 182) The book information provided by Seth Holmes himself in his field research, one of many useful social research methods. Seth Holmes not just addressing racial and economic problems with words, but his experience with actual people and with his medical knowledge.

My Opinion on Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies

After I read this book, I think that I understand that the ethnic and economic problems are not just a barrier, but formed by multiple factors of inconvenience and harmful policies. For parts, Holmes thinks that there could be solution if we take actions in a large scale. In this case, I do agree with Holmes' rational overall analysis and provided solutions, "Globally, and perhaps most important, the formation of broad coalitions of people is necessary in order to envision and work for a more equitable international economy such that people would not be forced to leave their homes to migrate in the first place."(Holmes 197-198) because he dissected the problems and made clearly to what source is causing the phenomenon that we see.

Why Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies is Relatable

The reason that this book is relatable is because not only that Holmes pointed out unequal, medical and economic problems, he also explained one of the essences, hierarchy and institutional racism. "In general in U.S. agriculture, the more Mexican and the more 'indigenous' one is perceived to be, the more psychologically stressful, physically strenuous, and dangerous one's job."(Holmes 95) This problem may not be only appearing with migrant farmworkers in the U.S., but also people that suffering from poverty around the world, in which hierarchy has its effect in all of this.
